Maison & Objet, a Paris, is a place for all designers in the world to reload ideas and creativity.
This year in January, I filled up!
I could write about all of them, but I made a choice, and following my list today I am talking about Utopia and Utility.
Who are they and what do they produce?
The founders of U&U are the brothers Pia and Moritz Wüstenberg and they started with an interesting philosophy today: "combining traditional materials in innovative ways".
Here craftsmanship is at the center of every object, everything comes from expert hands, be it glass blowers, carpenters, ceramicists, metal spinners, cork experts, they travel all over Europe in search of the talent necessary to forge the perfect product.
The creative mind belongs to Pia, who graduated from the Royal College of Arts Design Products in London, combines the passion for materials and craftsmanship by giving shape to vases, chandeliers, home decor accessories, and very special furniture.
Glass, wood, ceramic, soapstone, metal, paper and cork.
The natural materials they use are all direct resources from Earth:
- the raw material for glass comes from Sweden and melted in Bohemia and England;
- the wood comes from the forests of Finland, taking the fallen trees;
- copper and brass are alloys extracted from the earth and then worked by a family company in the United Kingdom;
- soapstone is extracted from the earth in Finland;
- the clay is extracted in the United Kingdom and Germany and cooked locally.
I wanted to summarize these points because they marry a conscious design, use natural materials, make local crafts work.
Their pieces are destined to last over time, intended not only as a material becoming more beautiful, but also as a style.

Quest'anno a gennaio, ho fatto il pieno!
Potrei scrivere di tutti, ma ho fatto una scelta, e seguendo la mia lista oggi vi parlo di Utopia e Utility.
Chi sono e cosa producono?
I fondatori di U&U sono i fratelli Pia e Moritz Wüstenberg e hanno iniziato con una filosofia oggi molto interessante: "combinare materiali tradizionali in modi innovativi".
Qui l'artigianato è al centro di ogni oggetto, tutto viene plasmato da mani esperte, che si tratti di soffiatori di vetro, falegnami, ceramisti, filatori di metallo, esperti di sughero, viaggiano in tutta Europa alla ricerca del talento necessario per creare il prodotto perfetto.
La mente creativa appartiene a Pia, che si è laureata al Royal College of Arts Design Products di Londra, unisce la passione per i materiali e l'artigianato dando forma a vasi, lampadari, accessori per la casa e mobili molto speciali.
Vetro, legno, ceramica, pietra ollare, metallo, carta e sughero.
I materiali naturali che usano, sono tutte risorse dirette dalla Terra:
- la materia prima per il vetro proviene dalla Svezia e lavorata in Boemia e Inghilterra;
- il legno proviene dalle foreste in Finlandia, prendendo gli alberi caduti;
- il rame e l'ottone sono leghe estratte dalla terra e successivamente lavorate da un'azienda familiare nel Regno Unito;
- la pietra ollare viene estratta dalla terra in Finlandia;
- l'argilla viene estratta nel Regno Unito e in Germania e cotta localmente.
Volevo riassumere questi punti perché sposano un design consapevole, usano materiali naturali, fanno lavorare l'artigianato locale.
I loro pezzi sono destinati a durare nel tempo, intesi non solo come materiale che diventa più bello, ma anche come stile.
